ONE MORE DAY ...

... to help us show our awesome DCIS staff members how much we appreciate their dedication, passion and excellence in working long hours and going way above and beyond for our students every day.

TOMORROW, Friday, May 4, is the
LAST DAY to donate gift cards so we can distribute them next week during Staff Appreciation Week, May 7–11. As of right now, we've received exactly ZERO cards. WE NEED ALL HANDS ON DECK!!

If you've been meaning to contribute, PLEASE ... stop by your nearest grocery store today and pick up a pack of cards in $5, $10 or $15 amounts and ask your student to deposit them in the box in the front office. If that feels like too much effort, the PTSA also is accepting monetary donations, which they'll use to purchase gift cards. You can make online donations here (be sure to indicate in the Special Instructions to Seller box that your donation is for gift cards).

We're also hosting a breakfast for the staff on their last day of the school year, Friday, June 1. If you'd like to help with that by providing a tasty treat or beverage, y
ou can sign up here. (You can drop off nonperishable items earlier that week in the front office.)

RIDING THE ROLLER-COASTER OF ADOLESCENCE

Adolescence can be a tricky time for your kids as their bodies and brains rapidly change, not to mention their hormones, thoughts and feelings. Dealing with the flurry of changes that propel kids into young adulthood can also be hugely challenging for parents, especially if the changes seem to happen overnight. The good news is … you're not alone!

Join your fellow parents in learning to recognize, understand, successfully navigate and help your kids manage the crazy roller-coaster ride of adolescence in an upcoming presentation sponsored by the DCIS PTSA on Thursday, May 10, in the DCIS cafeteria.

The presentation is 6–6:30 pm, followed by a 15-minute Q&A session. Following the presentation, the PTSA will hold its last meeting of the 2017-18 school year, during which it will discuss next year's PTSA officers and plans, wrapping up by 7:30 pm. Childcare and simultaneous interpretation provided.

What about dinner that Thursday night (May 10)? Swing by Chipotle at 6th & Broadway between 4 and 8 pm, mention the DCIS PTSA when you order, and 50% of your order amount will be donated to the PTSA! We need at least $300 in sales to qualify, so please stop by! Dine in or grab and go, as you're welcome to bring your dinner to the meeting.

 PLEASE TAKE THE
PARENT SATISFACTION SURVEY

DCIS values input from our families, and we want to hear from you! Your feedback will provide critical information to help us improve as a school as we work to serve your child each day. By responding to the survey, you are also helping DCIS's efforts to receive a positive rating on the School Performance Framework, which is like a report card for schools. This information will help us make improvements to the school to create an environment in which all students can succeed.

These surveys are anonymous and confidential. All the responses will be summarized into a report and can be found here. The parent and student satisfaction reports will be posted online in late August. You will also find the prior year's report posted.

To participate, please complete the survey using the student number (aka lunch number) for your eldest child at DCIS. You can find the survey herePlease complete the survey by Friday, May 11.

Each household should fill out only one survey per school. If you have more than one student at DCIS, we ask that you think about your overall experience and answer the questions based on all your students. If the survey does not default to your preferred language, use the drop-down menu on the first page of the survey to change it. If you cannot find your preferred language, please contact the school office, and they can ensure that you receive a survey in the correct language.

We appreciate your feedback and look forward to learning from your input and sharing our results with our school community!

A SALUTE TO LUTZ

The DCIS Auditorium Dedication and DCIS alumni gathering on Saturday, April 28, was a wonderfully warm, intimate event in celebration of DCIS founder and first principal Dr. Dan Lutz. A number of former teachers and students (including one who graduated 27 years ago!) enjoyed catching up, reminiscing and making new connections. If you haven't seen them already, be sure to check out the plaques honoring Dr. Lutz on the wall outside the main auditorium doors.

STUDENTS SEEKING HELP WITH POWWOW

The Native American Student Alliance Club at Denver Center for International Studies will be hosting a powwow (a social gathering for sharing culture and dance) on May 11, 2–6 pm, in the courtyard on the DCIS campus. This powwow will allow Native American students to share their culture and dance with staff, students and their families as well as the community. If you'd like to help out in raising funds to support this effort, check out the club's gofundme page here
