LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL ...

Dear DCIS Parents,

We are in the home stretch! Friday, May 19, will be the last day of school for our seniors. Congratulations to our Class of 2017! All other students will attend school for the full week of May 22. Then for the week of May 29, we all have a holiday for Memorial Day on Monday, May 29. Students in grades 8-11 will complete their last day of school on Wednesday, May 31. The Continuation ceremony for 8th grade students will be held the evening of May 31, beginning at 6 pm in the DCIS auditorium. Meanwhile, students in grades 6 and 7 will complete their last day of school on Thursday, June 1, which will be a Field Day featuring fun activities and a preview of their classes for next year. It promises to be a fun and informative day for all!

As close as we are to the end, we're not finished yet. All students (except for seniors) still have final projects, quizzes and even final exams to go. Please help us remind students that the last two weeks of school are very important and in many cases weigh heavily in terms of the students' final grades. So it is as important as ever for students to arrive to class on time and put in their best effort during these last two weeks. Their reward will be a nice, long summer vacation!

Thank you for your help and support of your DCIS student during these important last two weeks of school.

ATTENTION SOCCER FANS: PRICE REDUCED!
The Rapids professional soccer team donated four vouchers to the DCIS girls' Phoenix soccer team. We're selling those vouchers and will use the funds to pay for basic soccer needs for the girls, such as soccer balls, training equipment and uniforms. For all you soccer fans in the DCIS community, this is your chance to go to a Rapids game while supporting the Phoenix girls soccer program.

Each voucher is good for two tickets. After purchasing the voucher, you log in to the Rapids website and choose the game you want to attend. It's that easy and flexible! We're hoping for $70 per voucher, just $35 per ticket, and they work in pairs. If $70 doesn't work, make me an offer! We want to have these sold by the end of the year. Please pass this offer along to other Rapids/soccer fans.

Please email Lania Howard for more information or to purchase the tickets.

Go Phoenix and go Rapids!

AMAZON SMILE FOR DCIS
Did you know that the DCIS PTSA has an Amazon Smile account? What is Amazon Smile? It's a simple way for you to donate to your favorite charitable organization — us! — every time you shop on Amazon, without spending any extra money. Either go to smile.amazon.com or click here to find out more about how Amazon Smile works, and then select DCIS PTSA to start donating with your next Amazon purchase. Thanks!

"Man's Best Friend" Edition

Did you know...
  • Three dogs survived the sinking of the Titanic: two Pomeranians and one Pekingese.
  • Dogs' eyes contain a special membrane, called the tapetum lucidum, which allows them to see in the dark.
  • 45% of dogs sleep in their family's bed (we're pretty sure a large percentage also hog the blankets!).
  • It's a myth that dogs see only in black and white. In fact, it's believed that dogs see primarily in blue, greenish-yellow, yellow and various shades of gray.

COLLABORATIVE SCHOOL COMMITTEE
The final CSC meeting for this school year is Tuesday, May 16, 4:30–6:30 pm. There will be at least one open seat for a parent member on the CSC next year, so this would be a great time to come and check it out and see what the CSC is all about. The first 10 minutes of every monthly meeting are open for public comment, and we welcome and encourage ALL families to stick around for the entire meeting. If you have something you would like the CSC to discuss or questions you'd like answered, we encourage you to reach out to one (or all!) of your representatives (student/teacher/parent) and let us know what's on your mind. On this month's agenda is looking over the final Unified Improvement Plan (filed with the CDE). View April's meeting minutes and May's full agenda here. We hope you can join us!

Thanks!

Please bring your family to see "Finding Dory" at the Student Council Movie Night on Wednesday, May 17. The suggested donation of $5 (and all other money raised) will go to a DCIS family in need. The movie will start at 3:30 pm in the auditorium, and we will have snacks for sale ranging from $1-$2. Come help out some members of our community, and watch a great movie in the process! We look forward to seeing everyone there.
YEARBOOKS ARE HERE!

It's officially yearbook time! Yearbooks are being sorted and will be delivered to students who preordered by Friday (tomorrow).

We have just a few unsold copies left, and one can be yours for $50. This year's yearbook is full-color and is a fantastic tribute to the great DCIS moments of 2016-2017. Yearbooks will be sold every day next week at lunch, or you can purchase one by emailing
abby_hoffman@dpsk12.org. Once they're gone, they're gone, so buy yours today!

Thunderstorm Edition

Did you know...
  • The average temperature of lightning is around 36,000 °F.
  • Every day 18,000 thunderstorms occur all over the earth.
  • The most costly hailstorm occurred in Munich, Germany, in 1984, causing a billion dollars' worth of damage.
  • Cars are a great shelter from the lightning. But, contrary to popular belief, it's the metal frame and sides that provide protection, not the rubber tires.
