WE'RE SO CLOSE!

Staff Appreciation Week is NEXT WEEK (May 1–5). If you've been meaning to donate gift cards but just haven't gotten around to it, now's the time! We're just $320 worth of gift cards shy of our goal ... please help us show our awesome staff some much-deserved love by donating one or more $5 and $10 gift cards before 3 p.m. on Monday, May 1. You can drop them off in the collection box in the front office, or, if you'd rather make a monetary donation so the PTSA can purchase cards, click here.

Other ways to show your appreciation:

WITH WORDS: Take a minute or two to fill out this form with a short testimonial or anecdote about a staff member (or two or three) who has made a difference. Students AND parents are welcome to fill out the form as many times as they'd like.

WITH FOOD: Sign up to bring a tasty treat for the staff to share at the breakfast on Thursday, May 4 (drop off the day before or bring the day of). You can sign up here.

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL ...

Dear DCIS Parents,

What a week of great news for DCIS! First of all, we had a huge turnout for our New Student/New Parent night, with more than 150 families in attendance. Our Student Ambassadors and parent volunteers did a fantastic job in both welcoming and informing all of our new "Phoenixes to be," and the night was a huge success.

Second, DCIS was named by the educational international tour group EF Tours as the No. 1 high school in Colorado for exchange students, which presented us with the Global Education Excellence Award. Very cool. Come by the main office and check out the new plaque.

And last but not least, this week U.S. News & World Report released its list of top high schools. DCIS was rated No. 12 in Colorado, which is quite an honor. Of the DPS schools that made this prestigious list, DCIS is No. 3 in the district, behind two charter schools. So take a moment to congratulate yourself and your students for making DCIS one of the best schools in the city, the state and the country!

To celebrate, come out to see our wonderful spring musical, "Once Upon a Mattress," which will be performed on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, starting at 6 pm. Also, if your child has not purchased a DCIS yearbook for this award-winning year, please take a moment to order one today (check out the notice below on how to order).

As always, thank you for sharing your wonderful children with us. They make DCIS a great place to be.

Theresa McCorquodale
DCIS Principal

RAISE YOUR HAND …

RAISE $$ FOR STUDENT TRAVEL
Is your child traveling to Italy, London, Peru or France in 2018? Are you the parent of a 9th grader interested in saving money for the class Canyonlands trip next year? Is your son/daughter 16+ and willing to work to earn money for his/her travels? If you answered yes to any of these, read on!

DCIS is partnering with the Denver Broncos to run concessions at all home games this season. Additionally, DCIS will be working events at the stadium over the summer. On average, each person who works will earn $75 per game (about $10 per hour) plus tips. All the money earned will be put in travel accounts at DCIS, earmarked for your child's future trips. Interested? Please email Karen Gentzler.

TRAVEL CENTER NEWS ...

INNOVATORS DINNER WITH THE FOUNDER OF MIT D-LAB
Co-creating Simple Solutions to Change Lives
Friday, May 5, 6–8:30 pm, Posner Center, 1031 33rd St., Denver
(map)

Join us at the 3rd Annual Posner Center Innovators Dinner to learn about the power of simple design and support innovation in international development. The evening will feature Amy Smith, the Founder of MIT D-Lab, a university-based program that equips individuals with the skills to design simple technologies that solve challenges in their lives. All proceeds from the evening will support the Posner Center's efforts to promote learning and innovation within our network.

Amy was selected as a 2004 MacArthur Fellow, and was named in 2010 as one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people for her work promoting local innovation and technology creation. D-Lab connects university-level design curriculum with international field work through their unique Creative Capacity Building (CCB) approach that allows anyone to become an active creator of technology. Through CCB, participants are trained on key elements of the design process, and they use these skills to create technologies to strengthen their communities.

The evening will include a social hour, followed by dinner and a formal program featuring a keynote address by Amy Smith.

Antarctica Edition

Did you know...
  • Snow falling at the South Pole takes about 100,000 years to "flow" to the coast of Antarctica.
  • Using a drilled ice core, a glaciologist could easily give you a drink of water that was frozen during the time of the Roman Empire.
  • The Dry Valleys of Antarctica are the driest place on Earth, with low humidity and almost no snow or ice cover.
  • The existence of Antarctica was completely unknown until the continent was first spotted in 1820.
