DCIS Connect Newsletter (April 25-May 2, 2018)

Weekly Newsletter for Parents, Staff and Students
April 26-May 2, 2018

(Leer en Español usar el traductor de Google aquí.)

Due to significant anticipated teacher absences, DPS is canceling all classes for TOMORROW, Friday, April 27. The day was originally planned as an early-release day to accommodate the many educators statewide who are gathering to rally at the Capitol for increased school funding. But given the number of teachers planning to take the entire day off, DPS did not believe it could sufficiently staff schools even for a half-day. This is the case with most of our surrounding districts as well. Related to the closings, please note the following:
  • Middle school athletic games are also canceled. Check in with your student's coach for the latest updates.
  • The 34th Annual Shakespeare Festival will continue as scheduled.
  • More information will be shared soon regarding transportation for families on April 27.
If you have questions or concerns, please email Principal Theresa McCorquodale at

With apologies for the inconvenience, in light of DPS canceling classes on Friday, April 27, we are postponing the DCIS Celebration until August, to coincide with our Welcome Back Taco Night. We'll have all the details available at registration in early August.

The Reunion/Auditorium Dedication will still take place this Saturday, April 28, 5:30–8 pm. Hope to see you there for this very special event.

The PTSA is collecting gift cards to distribute to staff during Staff Appreciation Week, May 7-11, AND we're hosting a breakfast for them on Friday, June 1, their last day of the school year. Here's how you can help:
  • GIFT CARD SHOWER: Drop off one or more gift cards in the collection box in the front office by 3 p.m. on Friday, May 4 — please bring cards in the amounts of $5, $10 or $15. Monetary donations can also be made here, which the PTSA will use to purchase gift cards.
  • STAFF BREAKFAST: DCIS has asked that the staff appreciation breakfast be the last day of the year for staff, on Friday, June 1. Please sign up to provide tasty treats for the staff to share at the breakfast (nonperishable items can be dropped off earlier in the week). You can sign up here.

With summer vacation quickly approaching, many parents are tasked with the overwhelming responsibility of making sure their children are safe, fed and well cared for. In addition, you want to find something for your child to do that is low cost (or better yet, free!), and will match their hobbies and interests. This may seem like an impossible task, but DenverRAP has made life a little easier for you with a list of low-cost and free summer camps and activities for Denver youth. For the full list, visit this site.

Join DCIS's own Caroline Kerswill and several other great educators at Sky Vista Middle School for a summer program that focuses on proving the relevance of theatre arts in a STEM-focused world. At this science center with an arts education emphasis, students will create original theatre productions based on stories that need to be told in our community. Our mission is to provide young adults with the opportunity to make genuine connections with valuable content to help them grow in self-discovery, confidence and citizenship. The Native American Student Alliance Club at Denver Center for International Studies will be hosting a powwow (a social gathering for sharing culture and dance) on May 11, 2–6 pm, in the courtyard on the DCIS campus. This powwow will allow Native American students to share their culture and dance with staff, students and their families as well as the community. If you'd like to help out in raising funds to support this effort, check out the club's gofundme page here
