LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL ...

Greetings from the third week of school! DCIS is buzzing with activity — from rich summer reading discussions in 9th grade to learning about the atmosphere and tornadoes in 6th grade to Passages research proposals in 11th grade to understanding the Millennium Development Goals in the 8th grade to learning about drought and water resources in Africa in the 7th grade to writing college essays in the 12th grade. Never a dull moment.

I look forward to seeing all of you at Back to School Night next Tuesday, Sept. 13. We are adding a special feature this year called Club Expo, which will run from 5:15 to 5:45 to allow both parents and students to talk with representatives of the various school clubs. We'll move to the auditorium for a brief introduction and overview of what to expect for the evening, after which all parents will follow their children's schedule. You'll spend 8 minutes in each of your child's classes and have a 4-minute passing period between each class. The bell will ring to let you know when each "class" begins and ends. Don't be tardy!

RAISE YOUR HAND ...

There are many ways for parents to "raise their hand" to get involved in the goings-on at DCIS and in the Denver Public School (DPS) district. Sometimes it's just by giving us your opinion on a survey, other times by lending a hand at an event. And if you want to up your involvement a notch, we have plenty of ways you can do that as well. We'll feature various opportunities in this section as they arise. Please join us!!

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK: Please take a few minutes to complete our four-question survey to help our Cultural Enrichment Team in planning events and activities for the 2016–2017 school year. These experiences will provide our students with additional knowledge, skills and perspectives to support their development as global learners. Take the survey here:  English   Spanish

VOTE FOR THE PARENTS YOU WANT TO REPRESENT YOU on the Collaborative School Committee (CSC). Three excellent candidates have thrown their hat into the ring for the two open parent spots. Please click here to read more about each of them and to cast your vote! Voting will close on Monday, Sept. 12 at noon. The two candidates with the most votes will serve as parent members on the CSC for a term of two years. Elected members will be notified on Monday and will be asked to attend the CSC hand-off meeting on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 4:30 pm. This meeting is open to the public, and we encourage EVERYONE to join us!

HELP BEAUTIFY THE SCHOOL: The PTSA Beautification Team will tour the school and talk about beautification project opportunities on Tuesday, Sept. 20, at two different times: 7-7:30 am (meet in lunchroom) OR  7:30–8 pm (meet in room 103), immediately following the DCIS Family Night. To RSVP, click here.

DPS OPPORTUNITIES FOR INVOLVEMENT include Districtwide Advisory Committee (DAC) meetings for English Language Acquisition (ELA) families, Superintendent Parent Forums on various topics, and Family Leadership Institute trainings. Check out the calendar for all these events here.

COUNSELORS' CORNER ...

FAFSA WORKSHOPS: The Denver Scholarship Foundation is hosting a number of workshops this fall to help high school seniors complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can find more information about workshop dates, times and locations, as well as a list of items to bring, here.

PSAT REGISTRATION: Sophomores and juniors can still register for the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Submit the $15 registration fee (cash or check) by the end of the day on Friday, Sept. 9 (tomorrow), to Ms. Monteon in the counseling office.

EXTRACURRICULARS ...

SHARK TANK ASPIRATIONS? AdVenture Capital (AdCap) helps students bring their BIG ideas to life. This unique program inspires, empowers and supports creative, curious and bold students by teaching entrepreneurial skills and offering support through funding, mentors and experiences. Fifty students between the ages of 13 and 17 from Denver-area schools will come together at the Health Innovation Challenge, a free 6-hour workshop in which they will design projects that will make a difference in school and community health and wellness. The students will receive professional mentoring and compete in a head-to-head pitch competition, with 10 students each winning a $1,500 grant. Learn more here.

Helen Thorpe, award-winning author of Just Like Us and Soldier Girls, is the featured speaker at the DCIS Foundation's fundraiser on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 6 pm, in the Grant Family Education Center at Four Mile Historic Park. The event will include a student panel (including students from our school!) who will discuss immigration-related topics, as well as a silent auction and food and cocktails.
